Rate distortion when side information may be absent

چکیده
-The problem is considered of encoding a discrete memoryless source when correlated side information may or may not be available to the decoder. It is assumed that the side information is not available to the encoder. The rate-distortion function R( D,, D2) is determined where D, is the distortion achieved with side information and D, is the distortion achieved without it. A generalization is made to the case of m decoders, each of which is privy to its own side information. An appropriately defined D-admissible rate for this general case is shown to equal R(D) when the side information sources satisfy a specified degradedness condition. Explicit results are obtained in the quadratic Gaussian case and in the binary Hamming case.

Polar Codes and Polar Lattices for the Heegard-Berger Problem
Explicit coding schemes are proposed to achieve the rate-distortion function of the Heegard-Berger problem using polar codes. Specifically, a nested polar code construction is employed to achieve the rate-distortion function for the doubly-symmetric binary sources when the side information may be absent. The nested structure contains two optimal polar codes for lossy source coding and channel c...
متن کاملOn source coding with side-information-dependent distortion measures
High-resolution bounds in lossy coding of a real memoryless source are considered when side information is present. Let be a “smooth” source and let be the side information. First we treat the case when both the encoder and the decoder have access to and we establish an asymptotically tight (high-resolution) formula for the conditional rate-distortion function ( ) for a class of locally quadrat...
متن کاملOn Wyner-Ziv Networks
Wyner and Ziv [1] determined the rate-distortion function of source coding with side information. In this paper, we consider a network extension of their scenario: Many sources have to be compressed in a rate-distortion sense for a decoder that has access to uncompressed side information about the sources. This may model a sensor or multicamera network situation where the data collection point ...
متن کاملA Generalization of the Rate-Distortion Function for Wyner-Ziv Coding of Noisy Sources in the Quadratic-Gaussian Case∗
We extend the rate-distortion function for Wyner-Ziv coding of noisy sources with quadratic distortion, in the jointly Gaussian case, to more general statistics. It suffices that the noisy observation Z be the sum of a function of the side information Y and independent Gaussian noise, while the source data X must be the sum of a function of Y , a linear function of Z, and a random variable N su...
متن کاملDistortion Minimization in Gaussian Source Coding with Fading Side Information
We consider a layered approach to source coding that minimizes expected distortion when side information is available through a fading channel. Specifically, we assume a Gaussian source encoder whereby the decoder receives a compressed version of the symbol at a given rate, as well as an uncompressed version over a separate side-information channel with slow fading and noise. The decoder knows ...
